Some people use the beginning of a new year as a time for establishing goals or a "fresh start" on whatever they feel they need to address. To a degree, I am among those people, but I also use many other dates as mental springboards for renewing efforts in areas I perceive as needing attention. The first day of spring, Easter, first day of summer, my birthday, and even the 4th of July are all days I mentally mark as places in time where I take a deep breath, square up my shoulders, and start again.....on whatever endeavor I have previously attempted, but not completed to my satisfaction. Though I didn't begin this post with this blog in mind, it certainly qualifies for my list of personal endeavors not completed to my satisfaction. Today, I am simply grateful that I live in a time and place where I have the liberty to live my life as I choose with the luxury of being able to concern myself with things like self-improvement and goal fulfillment as opposed to other times and places where all one's resources (mental and otherwise) have been or are spent merely on physical survival. Despite whatever inequalities or prejudices that yet exist in this "land that I love", I am fortunate to have the freedom to be me - whatever that might mean on any given day.
