about two months ago I came across a story on CNN that made me happy for at least three reasons:
1. On a general note, I’m happy that finally, the military decided NOT to kick an individual out of service simply due to sexual orientation.
2. More personally, since I’m a fan of the Navy, I’m happy that the Navy was the first branch of the military to come to such a decision. My dad was in the Navy as was my grandfather, an uncle or two and some cousins. I think I might have served in the Navy as well if it wasn’t for the fact that an asthma diagnosis disqualified me from consideration. So this story adds to my Navy Pride.
3. Location, location, location. The decision to allow a known gay serviceman to continue actively serving took place at the Lemoore Naval Air Station located in central California. Want to take any guesses on where I was born? For some reason, I’ve also thought it kind of cool that I was born in a naval air station hospital (where my dad was stationed at the time). Now I have an even stronger affection for my birthplace.
I am grateful to all who have served and continue to serve the cause of protecting this nation’s people and freedoms.
